The OnePlus 10 Pro launch is just one long tease — and that’s the problem

The OnePlus ten Pro launch is simply one long tease — and that's the problem

Update (Jan 11): Good news! The teasing is over with OnePlus' final ten Pro announcement . However we still have to wait to buy one outside of China.

Just when you recollect OnePlus has started to grow upwardly, the company slides back into strange marketing gimmicks. This fourth dimension, the Chinese telephone maker has decided to go with a serial of elaborate teases in the lead up to the launch of its latest telephone, the OnePlus 10 Pro, in China — don't even become me started on the weird decision to launch the phone internationally months afterwards.

Nosotros've had three announcements at time of writing, each detailing slightly more information (the showtime on the OnePlus 10 Pro pattern, the next on its specs and the 3rd on its cameras). Teases are fine, simply baste-feeding information like this is simply abrasive.

Accept confidence in your product, and denote it outright. Tell us why we should care about it. This attempt to dominate the news cycle, especially during CES 2022, is top OnePlus vanity.

I'yard going to let y'all in on how things work in this manufacture in example you don't know already. Companies offering to transport u.s. information alee of fourth dimension as long as we agree to an embargo (or NDA, if you prefer). Normally, this is merely one embargo that tells us nigh the production in detail so that we tin can have manufactures about it ready for yous all when it'due south announced.

In this circumstance, OnePlus chose not i, not ii or even three, but four separate embargoes relating to the OnePlus x Pro. That's practically asking for some journalist to accidentally mail service something they shouldn't. Publications (and sometimes the companies themselves) unintentionally break embargoes oft enough that many writers and editors are extremely conscientious to check scheduled publish times.

OnePlus going this route has frustrated me to no end. Sure, OnePlus gets some extra attention each time i of the embargoes lifts. And certain, we're feeding correct into the intent to generate hype leading up to the launch. I totally meet why OnePlus did this, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Nor does it hateful that the press shouldn't admonish the company for this behavior.

From the days of old to trying to steal Samsung'due south thunder effectually the last round of foldables, OnePlus refuses to grow up. It likes to act like the upstart underdog it used to exist, but that is no longer the case. OnePlus is a major actor in the smartphone marketplace, peculiarly in its dwelling country and India. I wouldn't excuse this behavior from Samsung, Xiaomi or Apple (as if that'd ever happen).

And even if OnePlus was still the piffling phone maker that could, I'd still lambast this behavior. This is very much a short-term gain with long-term consequences state of affairs. OnePlus may savour the attention it craves now, merely what well-nigh the next time it tries to spin up hype? There'due south only so much people, media or consumer, are willing to tolerate.

So, OnePlus, stick to just announcing the telephone. We'll all be better off for it. Thanks.
